- Australia's Teachers: Australia's Future - Advancing Innovation, Science, Technology and Mathematics
The Review of Teaching and Teacher Education Final Report was released on 9 October. It is presented in three volumes: an Agenda for Action, a Main Report and Background Data and Analysis. The Agenda for Action presents the Review Committee’s main findings and conclusions and a range of actions the Committee believes need to be taken. The Main Report presents the reasoning and argument based on evidence from a wide variety of sources that underpin the Agenda for Action; and the Background Data and Analysis presents much of the data supporting the views formed during the course of the Review.
- REDI: Resilience Education and Drug Information
The REDI website is a drug resource for Australian school communities provided by DEST. It contains a comprehensive database of information about resources, policies and materials for drug education and incident management. You can search the REDI databse to find resources and other information for use in teaching school drug education.

- Figure This! Math Challenges for Families
Figure This! provides eighty printable math challenges and answer sheets for middle schoolers. The challenges can be used online by checking the two indexes for interesting topics, or download them in PDF format for printing and offline use. There are also sections for parents and teachers which provide tips on using the challenges. Supported by the National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Education.
- Beyond the Middle: A Report about Literacy and Numeracy Development of a Target Group Students in the Middle Years of Schooling
A report providing a useful national coverage of approaches assisting the literacy and numeracy development of Australian students in Years 5 to 10.
The work was undertaken by a research team headed by Professor Allan Luke and Professor John Elkins from the School of Education, University of Queensland and is a study of the efficacy of middle years programs in all States and Territories for improving teaching and learning, and student outcomes in literacy and numeracy.

- MyRead: Strategies for teaching reading in the middle years
The Australian Literacy Educators' Association (ALEA) and the Australian Association for the Teaching of English (AATE) have jointly developed an online resource to assist teachers of students in the middle years of schooling to meet the literacy needs of less able readers in their classes. MyRead incorporates strategies for teaching and learning that acknowledge the diversity of students, the value of monitoring and assessment to inform teaching, and the importance of teaching reading by teachers from all curriculum areas and the professionalism of teachers. MyRead includes a set of 16 reading guides to assist teachers with successful strategies to teach reading. Professor Peter Freebody from Griffith University was the academic advisor to the project.
One of the guides, Interlinks: Annotated Learning, is co-authored by Glenda Shopen in Cairns.

- A Good Start to Numeracy: Literature Review of Effective Numeracy Strategies in Early Childhood [.pdf file, 63 pages]
The Commonwealth has commissioned the Australian Council for Educational Research to undertake a longitudinal study examining the practices and learning experiences that support the early numeracy development of children in the year before school (2002) and the first year of schooling (2003). The title of the project is Project Good Start.
This PDF file reviews the international and Australian research literature on numeracy in early childhood with a focus on effective strategies and practices.

- National Quality Schooling Framework (NQSF)
The NQSF is an interactive, accessible web-based tool to support pre-primary, primary and secondary Australian school leaders and teachers implement innovative and evidence-based projects to improve student learning outcomes. The US National Institute of Child Health and Human Development reports that a combination of teaching phonics, knowledge of word sounds and giving feedback on oral reading is the most effective way to teach reading.

- Creating a Safe, Supportive Math Classroom
More students are becoming afraid to try new things in case they fail, and mathematics, with its emphasis on 'right' or 'wrong' answers, can potentially reinforce these fears, argues this writer. This article investigates ways mathematics teachers can help to create a secure, supportive classroom environment in which students learn not to fear failure and to value mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow.

Teachers in the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) can watch a video of a teacher presenting a mathematics lesson, analyze it with other teachers, and then try it out. This professional development program is offered by the University of California, Los Angeles Collaborative Institute. The program is designed to help educators reflect on their teaching on their own and with colleagues.

- Study of sun enlightens kids on UV dangers
Middle schoolers in Michigan are becoming enlightened to the risks of overexposure to the sun's ultraviolet rays through the national SunWise School Program sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. Students measure the intensity of ultraviolet rays, study the risks of spending too much time in the sun, and learn how to reduce those risks.

Part of a national effort to improve outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students, What Works, launched this week, encourages school principals and teachers to have high expectations of Indigenous student success and to develop a range of strategies that are linked to performance indicators and targets for Indigenous students. It is based on research that shows Indigenous students are more likely to experience educational success if their educators all share a fundamental belief in the value of what they are doing and the prospect of success.
