The following lists are a selection of materials held by the James Cook University Library about Australian Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders suitable for use by primary school students or teachers. In most cases the titles listed have been reviewed and recommended in various sources which are included in the Teacher Reference section. A number of more recent resources have not yet been listed in such sources but have received favourable reviews. Most review sources give an indication of grade level, and include other resources at secondary and tertiary level.
For detailed information on aims and objectives of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander studies and for evaluative criteria for assessment of materials, see Black Australia and Black Australia 2 by Barlow and Hill. Some of the other reference items also contain comments on evaluation of resources.
The majority of titles are located in the Curriculum Collection, indicated by the prefix C. Titles with no prefix are shelved in the general collection. These items can either be used as reference material by the teacher, or are suitable for selective use by primary students. Titles with the prefix R are located in the Reference Collection, those with AV are shelved in the Audiovisual Collection.
Titles which have been identified as originating from north Queensland or the Torres Strait Islands are indicated. Other titles may include stories or information on both Aborigines and Torres Strait Islanders.
