Introduction

This subject list indexes selected journals from the periodical collection of the James Cook University Library. Those selected contain resources at early childhood and primary school level, or are general journals with content suitable for primary-age students. Indexing is not complete, however several of the journals contain a comprehensive annual index.

It is recommended that students become familiar with the range of available journals which contain teaching resources. Browsing the new periodicals display or the shelves is time well spent. Many of these journals are available in schools, teachers often have personal subscriptions, and the University Library is always open to practising teachers. The list of journals indexed includes the years available, the call number, and the journal's homepage.

There are a number of subject-specific journals not indexed here. These can be accessed via the catalogue, Tropicat, using subject headings such as:

Science -- Study and teaching -- Periodicals

Some topics have accompanying illustrations. These are located in the Curriculum Collection, and the call number is written in the relevant issue of the journal.
N.B. Call numbers in Townsville follow the format: C ILLUS 1234. In Cairns, they have a Dewey number.

In general journals should be used in the Library. However if a special loan of a journal issue is needed, for example to use coloured pictures, please ask at InfoHelp.

The Curriculum Collection also contains a number of books on theme and project work.

This index also includes a number of URLs from the World Wide Web. No guarantee can be made as to the currency of these. Links to many curriculum resources can be found on the Web via various sites, for example the Education Librarian's homepage

There is a separate list of indexed titles. These can all be found in the James Cook University Townsville library at the listed call numbers, and a number are also held in Cairns. Students in Cairns are able to request photocopies from the Townsville library, and vice versa.

The list of topics is alphabetical by subject heading. It is kept up-to-date by the Education Librarian, Helen Hooper.
