Searching databases and libraries: The Basics
EndNote's great strength is in its capacity to import references from large commercial databases and library catalogues without the user having to type them in manually. There are three ways in which this is done:
- Connection Files: Connection files are used to access, search and retrieve references from online library catalogues. You can search these catalogues from within the EndNote program, capture references, and copy them into your EndNote library.
- Filter Files: Filters are programs that allow you to import references from databases such as ERIC or PsycINFO directly into EndNote. You search the online database via the native interface and import the references into your EndNote Library using a Filter file.Click here to see an animation that will demonstrate the process.
- Direct Export: A number of databases allow you to export directly from their search results screen into EndNote without using a Filter file. Examples include Web of Science and ProQuest 5000.
