If you want to make a suggestion about library services at JCU: comments, compliments and complaints welcome.
Post a Suggestion to the Library
Two databases not on the current list but I would use: speechbite http://www.speechbite.com/ and scopus http://www.scopus.com/. Thank you
Thank you for your suggestions which have been passed onto the Faculty Librarian, Medicine, Health & Molecular Sciences. We do have access to Web of Science which in many ways provides similar content in the science subject areas to Scopus. You can access Web of Science from our Databases page including guides on how basic, advanced and cited reference searching.
Speechbite (Speech Pathology database) is a free web resource which will be added to the Speech Pathology subject resources.

I have noticed that a lot of people use the print release stations to check or delete their print jobs and not actually printing. Perhaps a group email would make everyone aware that this can be done from any computer station they have been using by clicking on the Labprint option. This may help to reduce the line ups at the print release stations.
We have placed this labprint tip on our Library News website this week. We also include this information in the training we give new students each semester. The labprint guide explains in detail how students can preview and delete print jobs from their workstation rather than the print release station. We are unable at this time to send out a group email to all students as this is considered inappropriate use of the email facility, however we will publicise this on the undergraduate and post graduate bulletin boards for study period 2.

The air-conditioning on the top floor of the library is far too cold. It is not possible to sit at the computers for more than 15 minutes as the air-conditioning is blasting out. Is it possible to reduce the output at all? In a time of reducing carbon emissions etc, and given it is not even hot outside, surely the library does not need to be this cold? Everyone sitting around me is also putting on more and more layers so it's not just me! Many thanks
All air conditioned buildings are affected by the outside temperature and the number of people in the building. We are not able to turn the temperature up as this causes the books to sweat and could lead to outbreaks of mould in the collection, which in turn could cause a serious health issue. The air conditioning system we currently have has unusual patterns which makes it difficult to predict and control. The University is currently addressing issues with HVAC (Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning) on the entire campus with a Campus District Cooling Project and hopefully this will resolve issues in the long run.

Hello, I appreciate all the services at the JCU Library. I have used the scanner on the 1st floor of the library multiple times last year, in both semesters, and multiple times this year already, for presentation and essay preparation. The scanner machinary and system is incredibly slow, especially compared to the state of the art systems and computers that JCU offers on the same floor of the Library and at the same campus. I suggest the requistion of new scanner in keeping with the quality standards that JCU provide.
Thank you for this suggestion. We are currently updating the computer attached to the scanner as this may resolve the problem. If not, then we will also upgrade the scanner.

Is there a reason that there is not a copy of the pescribed textbook for each subject offered at JCU in the reserve section of the library. Many students find the cost of textbooks probibitive and access to the two day borrowing is hit and miss if the book is needed for weekly readings. If this is not an issue that the library can address can it be put to student welfare depatrments such as student equity to address. Thankyou
The Library receives a booklist from the Bookshop at the beginning of the year listing all the prescribed and recommended texts which are then purchased. These are placed on a 2 day loan to allow high turnaround of these texts. Multiple copies are purchased depending on the class numbers and the campus where it is taught. If there is not a copy of a particular prescribed text can you please let the Library so it can be ordered.

hi, thanks for the friendly service, wondering if it is possible to have more printers and photocopiers with recycled paper in the library? I understand that it may be more expensive, however I would like to know how this could be achieved, Kind Regards
Thanks for your suggestion. You may be aware that the Cairns Library currently has one photocopier, on the top floor, using recycled paper. Thus students do have the option of choosing to photocopy on recycled paper. Unfortunately at this point in time recycled paper is more expensive than other paper for us to purchase. So it has not been possible to introduce recycled paper across all printers and copiers without increasing the cost to students; we try to keep the cost of printing and copying as low as possible. However we do have sympathy for environmental issues and regularly review our supply of consumables such as paper, so it is possible the situation could change in the future.

Is it possible to set up a time limit for how long you can have "reserve online" documents open for? I have been experiencing a lot of frustration in opening required reading files as only one person at a time can have a particular file open due to copyright regulations. Realistically, one person only needs access to the document for a minute or two (not even that long!) to download the file to a memory stick, pc, or JCU i-drive. If a time limit was set - that automatically closed the document - this would allow greater access to a greater number of students in a shorter amount of time.
It is not true that only one person can open a copy of a file on reserve
online. Many people can open the same file, it is only if someone tries to
open another chapter from the same book that the copyright management system
kicks in.
Also you may occasionally experience problems when using the Firefox browser
with Reserve Online, we recommend that you use Internet Explorer.
Please contact InfoHelp with the particular file (subject code and title) to investigate further if you continue to experience problems.

the library facility is ususally very cold.the aircon is put too high and it makes it hard to study there,i ve heard quite a number of people complain about it too
All air conditioned buildings are affected by the outside temperature and the number of people in the building. We are not able to turn the temperature up as this causes the books to sweat and could lead to outbreaks of mould in the collection, which in turn could cause a serious health issue. May I suggest that you bring a jumper when visiting the library or move to one of the warmer areas.
