Connecting a Windows computer to the network via Ethernet cable is available anywhere on campus where there is a working network port. The following guide will take you through the steps involved in setting up your laptop to use the JCU network, and co-exist with home networks if necessary.

Should you experience any problems while following the guide, check the Support web page for further assistance.

  1. First we need to do is find your network card. Under Vista to do this you will need to click Start, then select Control Panel

  2. Inside Control Panel open the Network and Sharing Center icon

  3. Choose Manage Network Connections from the left side menu

  4. You will need to find a icon that is called Local Area Connection. If you don't have this icon you can't connect your laptop to the JCU network via this method.

  5. Once you have found that icon, right click it and choose Properties

  6. You should now be able to see the protocols, clients and services that this network card is currently supporting.
You will need at least the following enabled before you can use this computer on the JCU network.
    1. Client for Microsoft Networks
    2. Internet Protocol Version 4 ( TCP/IPv4 )

  7. In the list of tick-box items, select the one called Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) and choose Properties.
Make sure the Obtain an IP address automatically box is ticked
Make sure the Obtain DNS server address automatically box is ticked
If you have any values in any of these fields currently write them down, and then change the tick box to automatic.
  8. YOU ONLY NEED TO DO THIS IF YOU HAD TO WRITE DOWN VALUES IN STEP 7.
    Click Alternate Configuration.
    Click User configured
Type in the values you wrote down in Step 7 into the fields with the same name.

  9. Confirm all the settings by clicking Ok on all open screens.
Plug your Ethernet cable into your laptop and then also into a wall outlet.
The first time you connect it will ask you to choose a security profile for this network.
    Choose Public Location
  10. At the confirmation screen it should now say Successfully set network settings
Click Close to finish the setup.
