Where can I find my lecture notes?
Try some of these suggestions if you are having difficulty locating those lecture notes that are "on the web".
- Try LearnJCU, available from http://learnjcu.jcu.edu.au and use your JCU computer account details to log in. This should display a list of the subjects you are enrolled in, click on one of your subjects to enter. Lecture notes are usually accessible from the Subject Materials button.
- From the JCU Homepage, go to Courses and Degrees, choose subjects and find the subject you are after. This will point you to a homepage if one exists.
- From the JCU Homepage, go to Faculties & Divisions, find the faculty your subject belongs to, then the school. From here you can look for links to subject pages or to lecturers' pages and you may find lecture notes lurking there.
- From the JCU homepage choose the search option, type in your subject code (i.e. an1001). This should display the handbook entry for your subject. Often there will be a link to the subject homepage from here, in a yellow box in the top right hand corner. You may find your lecture notes from the subject home page.
- If you have no luck in finding your lecture notes, check if they have been emailed to your JCU email account as attachments.
- If you just cannot locate your lecture notes, contact your lecturer as soon as possible, they will be able to tell you how to access them, if indeed they are available online.
- For lecture notes not available online, check the library catalogue, Tropicat, to see if copies of your lecture notes have been deposited in the Library reserve collection.
What software do I need to look at my lecture notes?
Study material requires applications software to read. Files ending in .
- PPT need Microsoft Powerpoint to view and manipulate them
- DOC need Microsoft Word to view and edit them
- XLS need Microsoft Excel to view and edit them
- RTF need any word processor to view and edit them
- PDF need Adobe Acrobat reader ( download free Adobe Reader software http://www.jcu.edu.au/misc/aboutpdf.html)
- Sound files like AVI or MP3 need something like WinAmp or Real Player (available to download from the web)
- Movie files like MOV or MPEG can use QuickTime (available from http://www.apple.com or from the JCU FTP server at ftp://ftp.jcu.edu.au/pub/Mirrors/QuickTime/
How do I download my lecture notes?
- You can open lecture notes in the relevant applications software and save them to disk using File|Save As.
- You can use your right mouse button to click on the link that opens your lecture notes and select "Save Target As " and save your lecture notes to floppy disk, CD or your Homes Drive.
What about Printing lecture notes?
There are various options available when it comes to printing out lecture notes and most of these options will save you a bit of money. In many instances you will be printing your lecture notes from LearnJCU. Here are some tips for making printing from LearnJCU and applications software, like MS Powerpoint, more successful.
Printing MS Word lecture notes from LearnJCU
- Microsoft Word documents usually open in Internet Explorer with the MS Word toolbar hidden. The easiest way to print these embedded documents is to hit CTRL-P on the keyboard or Print from the browser File Menu.
- It is important to check that your cursor is flashing in the document frame before you press Print.
- Netscape usually launches the relevant applications software with all toolbars visible.
Tips for better printing in MS Word
- You can reduce the font size (Format|Font) to something a little smaller, to reduce the number of pages for printing.
- Print 2-4 pages per sheet of A4. From File|Print select the "Pages per sheet" option from the bottom right corner.
Printing MS Powerpoint Lecture notes from LearnJCU
In LearnJCU, MS Powerpoint slides usually open in the Internet Explorer browser with the MS Powerpoint toolbar hidden. If you want to print your Powerpoint slides as handouts (e.g. 6 per page) follow these steps.- Internet Explorer
- Right click on the file link
- Select Save Target As (and save file to another location like a floppy disk or your homes drive).
- Open with MS Powerpoint application software.
- From the File Menu, select Print.
- Under Print what: select Handouts
- Select Slide per page (either 2,3,4,6 or 9)
- Press OK to print
- Netscape
- Clicking on the file will automatically launch the applications software.
- From the File Menu, select Print.
- Under Print what: select Handouts
- Select Slide per page (either 2,3,4,6 or 9)
- Press OK to print
Tips for better printing in MS Powerpoint
- You can choose to
remove any dark or patterned
backgrounds or bright
colours from the slides
to use less ink, and make
the slides more legible.
- From the Format menu choose Format|Slide Colour Scheme and select the Delete Scheme option to remove the colour scheme
- Next select Background and tick "Omit background graphics from master". This should change your slides to plain background and dark text.
- To print more than one slide to a page, chose File|Print and select "handouts" to be printed, this will give you the option to select the number of slides per page - which should cut down on printing cost considerably.
Printing Adobe Acrobat files
- If you want to print a PDF file that your a viewing within your web browser, select the Print icon from the Adobe Acrobat toolbar (just above the document) to print.
- DO NOT use your browser's print button.
- DO NOT select print
from the file menu.
- With Adobe Acrobat files, depending on your printer, you can select to print more than one slide to a page also. If the printer you have access to has the ability to do this, then from File|Print, select the Properties box. Select the Layout tab, if it is available, and change the layout from 1 page per sheet to 3-6 pages per sheet and then print.
