An InfoHelp How To...? Guide |
You must change the initial password that has been allocated to you. Below is a link to the web page for changing your password.
When you go to the web page, dependent on your browser
you will receive dialogue boxes containing phrases like "You have requested a secure document" or "security alert".
Don't be concerned by this. It means that you are going to a
secure page - It's very important that your password remain secret. Press "Continue" (if using Firefox) or "OK" (if using Internet Explorer).
In order to change your password you must login using your current username and password. If you don't know, have forgotten your username and/or password, or have been locked out by failed attempts please contact Infohelp. You will be asked a number of questions to validate your identity.
Passwords are case sensitive (ensure you have CAPS LOCK off), cannot contain your Login ID or email address, must be a minimum of 8 characters in length, must contain at least 1 numeric, 1 upper case and 1 lower case character and cannot repeat characters.
Passwords can only be changed or reset once per day and the password change will take affect on the hour.
Accounts are locked out of the system for an hour should there be 3 failed login attempts.

General Password Guidelines
Don't
- use a dictionary word from the English language or any other language. It is not sufficient to substitute 0 for O or to substitute 1 for L or I when spelling such words or to spell them backwards;
- Use non-alpha numerical characters, including spaces, in your password (your proxy authentication will not work if you do this).
- use names of real or fictitious people;
- use a word which someone could easily spot over your shoulder (qwerty or aabbccdd);
Do
- take the first letter from each word of a line or two from a song or poem and mix the case and add a number
- make up a nonsense word by choosing a consonant followed by one or two vowels, repeating until eight characters have been used. This can give a nonsense word which is pronounceable (and easy to remember)
- purposely misspell a word or words
- change your password frequently.

When can I use my Password?
This password is used for different purposes. Unfortunately at present it updates at different times for different services.
ITR are working to provide a password update mechanism that updates immediately for all services.
The password will take effect for your email at the next system processing update starting on the hour, every hour from 7am to 5pm.
Internet Accounting (or proxy) password updates occur between these times every hour at quarter to the hour.
Once your password has been changed you will be able to use the new password to log into the GATCF Labs, NT, email and Student/Staff Online in approximately one hour, but may need to wait longer to be able to use the new password to browse web pages outside JCU.
Forgotten Passwords and Disabled Accounts
If you have forgotten your password or your account has been disabled you need to contact InfoHelp.
A new password will be issued to you only upon presentation of identifying information. ITR are working to provide an online password change mechanism.
When you login using the replacement password for the first time, you will be required to change it following the guidelines above.
NOTE: Your login ID and password security are your responsibility; see Account and Computer Security
No JCU computer system or university staff member can tell you your current password.
All passwords are encrypted and any identifying information for password change is destroyed.
