World-wide Dial IP Service

InfoHelp Logo

An InfoHelp How To...? Guide

JCU has a new service from Telstra which gives dial-in access to JCUnet without having to own its own modem banks. This dial-in service is called Dial IP and can be accessed by staff and post-graduates of JCU from (almost) anywhere in the world. This will be a dial in solution for staff and post-grads and the costs will be accounted for and charged to the nominated charge code.

Firstly, fill in the Dial IP Account Application Form. It is available in Word or PDF format.

Dial IP Setup

You need to make a new dial-in connection.

  • From a Windows 9x or NT machine, select Dial-up networking from My Computer;
  • Select Make New Connection - this will start up a wizard.

  • In Windows 2000 right-click on My Network Places and select Properties;
  • Double-click on Make New Connection;
  • This will start a wizard.

  • In Windows XP, use your right mouse button to click on My Network Places, from the menu select Properties to open the Network Connections box.
  • Click Create a new connection and then follow the instructions in the New Connection Wizard.

  • You need to give your connection a name - how about JCU Dial IP?;
  • You may need to specify a country;
  • You shouldn't need an area code;
  • Type in the number you want to dial - type in the 0198-304891 number if you want to use the Dial IP service in Australia or one of the numbers for the USA or other countries;
  • You'll need your JCU account code (also know as your login or username) and password to authenticate successfully;
  • Apply and Save;
  • This should create a JCU Dial IP connection file which you can double-click to make the connection.

When you have successfully dialled in, you will get a JCU IP number and will then be part of the JCU network. You will be able to access email and the Internet as if you were on campus.

Note: Once you have finished with your dial up session you must de-authenticate from the firewall, otherwise the next person who uses dial-ip will be using your internet quota. This is because the next user to dial up will get the same IP number and the firewall will log all their usage to the username logged against that IP.

International Access

Setting up Dial IP for access overseas is the same as for Australia-wide. The only difference is that from overseas you MUST enter your account code as:

telstraau/account_code@jcu.edu.au

You can enter your password as normal.

Lists of dial-in numbers are available for:

Tips and Extras

On older win95 systems

You may want to remove IPX and Netbeui protocols but it is not essential.

You can find this setting by looking at the properties of your JCU connection file.

Select Dial Up Networking from the My Computer icon on your desktop. Use your mouse to right-click on your JCU connection file. Select Properties from the menu that appears.

Find the Networking information and remove NetBeui and IPX.
