PuTTY

An InfoHelp How To...? Guide

PuTTY is a piece of software that allows connection to JCUNet using Securre SHell (SSH). It is for use with Windows 95, Windows 98 and Windows NT computers. Secure SHell allows a program to securely connect to a remote computer. Telnet is an insecure method for connecting to remote computers and direct telnetting to JCUNet from outside the University is not possible.

PuTTY is a very small piece of software that when downloaded from the Australian mirror site, is ready and easy to use.

Using PuTTY to access JCUNet

Once the putty.exe file has been downloaded, you can double click on it to start PuTTY. You may want to make a shortcut on the desktop to make it easier to start PuTTY.

Start PuTTY and fill in the dialogue box as follows:

PuTTY Configuration Window

Click on the Open button to get to the email/marlin terminal login screen:

Marlin Unix Login Window

Type in your login and password and you should be able to use pine emailer or connect to other JCU servers. Very simple.
