SPSS is a comprehensive and flexible statistical analysis and data management system. SPSS can take data from almost any type of file and use it to generate tabulated reports, charts, and plots of distributions and trends, descriptive statistics, and to conduct complex statistical analyses. James Cook University has a site licence for SPSS software (for both Windows and Macintosh PCs) that allows JCU staff members to install the SPSS product, as covered under the agreement, onto a University owned machine without the necessity of purchasing individual software licenses.

Academic Support is not responsible for training staff in the usage of the SPSS software package. The Library holds many books on using SPSS software, including SPSS manuals, guides and handbooks. To install the software onto a University owned machine, contact your IT-Support Officer who will have a copy of the software. The following guide provides instructions on how to renew the SPSS licence code. The licence codes expire on the 31st December and need to be renewed annually, a current licence code can be obtained from either your IT-Support Officer or from InfoHelp.

SPSS for Windows | SPSS for Macintosh

SPSS 11.x and 12.x for Windows

To update your SPSS licence on a Windows PC follow the instructions below:

Go to the directory (folder) where SPSS is installed and double-click on the icon named licrenew (depending on your Windows configuration, the name might be licrenew.exe). This needs to be run as Administrator either by right-clicking on the program in Explorer and selecting "Run As", or by logging onto the PC as Administrator and executing the program. If you are not the Administrator for your PC then you will need to contact your IT-Support Officer and have them perform the licence renewal for you.
You will be prompted to enter the new licence code. Type this in exactly as specified, with one space between each group of digits, then press the enter key.
If it worked, you'll be prompted for another license code. Press enter to exit this application.

SPSS should now have been updated correctly. If you wish to check on a SPSS installation's expiry date, Start the SPSS software and open a new syntax window (File >> New >> Syntax) and type in and execute the command line below:

show licence.

Note: Don't forget the fullstop (.) at the end of the command line.

SPSS 10.x and 11.x for Mac OS9 & OSX

SPSS 10 for Mac OS9

To update your SPSS 10.x licence on a Macintosh PC running OS9 follow the instructions below:

A small piece of software called the SPSS 10 License Renewal Utility is required to apply the new license code. This piece of software is included on the SPSS 10 for Mac OS9 CD, but it is not installed to your hard disk when you install SPSS.

In case you do not have the SPSS 10 for Mac OS9 CD, you can download the SPSS 10 License Renewal Utility from spss.com.

The downloaded file is stuffit'd so you will need StuffIt Expander or some similar utility to decompress it.

Download the SPSS 10 License Renewal Utility at ftp://ftp.spss.com/pub/spss/mac/spss10licrenew.sit

To apply your new validation code to SPSS software, run the SPSS License Renewal Utility and enter the new code where indicated.

SPSS 11 for Mac OSX

To update your SPSS 11.x licence on a Macintosh PC running OSX follow the instructions below:

A small piece of software called the SPSS 11 License Renewal Utility is required to apply the new license code. This piece of software is included on the SPSS 11 for Mac OSX CD, but it is not installed to your hard disk when you install SPSS.
