JCU has purchased a site
license for SOPHOS Anti-Virus software. This allows for installation
of the software on:
- all University owned computers and
- the primary home computer of JCU staff and JCU students.
This guide is designed to help the home user and
those with standalone computers on campus. Please be aware that
in this case, it is the responsibility of the user to update
their copy of Sophos Anti-Virus software regularly.
It is recommended that University-owned computers have Sophos
installed and configured for automatic updating and scanning by the Faculty
and Divisional IT Support Officers.

Updating Sophos
It is recommended that Sophos is updated regularly
for virus protection to remain effective. Regular updates are available
from the Sophos Anti-virus site at http://www.sophos.com/downloads/ide/
From here the latest IDE files (virus identity files)
can be downloaded. These files are downloaded as ZIP files. Sophos
has accompanying instructions on how to install the IDE files too.
These instructions cover different operating systems, like Windows
95, Windows NT, and can be found at http://www.sophos.com/support/faqs/usingides.html
NOTE: It is the responsibility of the home and
standalone user to obtain and install virus signature updates.
New viruses can appear daily, in some cases.
