Location of your tour or workshop: For all Library Tours please gather at the meeting point in the foyer of the library a few minutes before the scheduled start time. For other workshops please look for signage in the Library on the day of your workshop or ask at the InfoHelp desk on the first floor.
Library Orientation Tours
The Library Orientation Tour is compulsory for new students. This 30 minute tour will explain:
- Where to find books, journals and other materials in the library
- Where to find General Access computers in the Library
- How to borrow books, extend loans and place holds on materials
- What services and facilities are available in the Library
- And more...

Finding Journal articles
Impress your lecturers with excellent sources of information for assignments and essays. Learn how to find journal articles not on your reading list! Access and search the library's electronic databases which provide references to journal articles and sometimes the full text. Retrieve journal articles online and in print. Top 10 Assignment Research Tips
Find out how to get the information you need to do assignments successfully. This session covers basic skills in analysing your topic, selecting and locating information, basic use of a database and referencing your assignment. After attending a session you will be able to search for information using the Library Catalogue and Reserve Online. For scheduled sessions please see the Timetable.
Getting connected @ JCU: Hands on skills for JCU online
We highly recommend that you attend this hands on workshop and find out how to get the maximum benefit from your JCU computing account. This 'hands-on' computer workshop will provide a pathway through the various online resources and systems essential for a successful Uni experience. Discover how to use:
- Online tutorial sign-up
- Labprint
- Homes drive
- Log into the computer lab and check your e-mail account
- Save your work and more
It is very important that you bring your student computer account code/username and password, (printed on the top half of your enrolment verification form, or available from InfoHelp), to the workshop.

Finding more on the web
These 1-hour workshops are for people who are new to the Internet and those who want to learn about search tools, tips and tricks. These workshops are highly recommended for students wishing to kickstart their knowledge on how to use the World Wide Web environment. Topics include:
- Basic navigation
- What is a search engine: How does it work? What types of search engines are there?
- Strategies for finding what you want using a simple search query
- Other tools and technologies such as gateways, portals etc
- Tips and tricks to get the best from your searches

Microsoft Applications - Word, Excel and Powerpoint
These workshops are one hour each on Word, Excell and Powerpoint and will introduce absolute beginners to the basics. The 'hands on' workshops will get you started and introduce you to the key features of these Microsoft applications.

Introduction to LearnJCU
If you're new at JCU (or even if you're not) drop in for an opportunity to learn more about LearnJCU which is JCU's online teaching and learning hub - with study resources, announcements, blogs, wikis, quizzes and assignment dropboxes for many of your JCU subjects. You can use LearnJCU to study at your own time, pace, and place in addition to attending classes.
