AUSTLIT - the Australian Literature Gateway - provides authoritative information on thousands of creative and critical Australian literature works in both print and electronic formats, and on more than 60 000 Australian authors and organisations, from 1780 to the present day. Comprehensive coverage is provided from 1988.
Access & Logging on
- AustLit can be accessed directly on campus using the URL: http://www.austlit.edu.au/ or from the Library & Computing Services page, follow links to Databases (under Library Resources). Select AustLit from the A-Z listing.
- To access from off-campus, login using your JCU username and password via Remote Access then follow the directions above.
Basic Search
- Use the pull-down menu to search the Entire Database, or select a specialist subset.
- Subsets are:
- Australia's Children's Literature
- Australian Drama
- Australian Magazines
- Australian Multicultural Writers
- Australian Literary Responses to Asia
- Banned in Australia
- Black Writers
- Literature of Tasmania
- South Australian Women Writers
- Western Australian Literature
- Writers of tropical Queensland
- Search by author or title or year
- Search by type or form or genre
- Browse the AustLit Thesaurus for subjects
- Use Boolean operators AND, OR, NOT to search for multiple terms,
e.g. cats and dogs; happiness or joy; marriages not crosscultural
Advanced Search
- The Advanced Search function allows you to design your own search form. Normally the Basic Search is adequate, however a further range of options is available for very complex queries.
- Select one (or more) of the attributes relating to authors or works or subjects, then enter your text or search value in the box and click on Search (eg if you click date of birth this search field will be added to the search terms)
Truncation
- Use the asterisk * to truncate in all forms of seaarching.
Results
- AustLit records are returned in alphabetical order for authors and organisations, and descending first publication date order for works.
- Results are returned first in brief view; click on the text in blue for more information.
- Options to sort are at the end of the list of results. The list can be re-sorted alphabetically by Title. Book will list separately published works first.
Indicates a published work, e.g. book or journal issue.
Click on this icon to see where the item is available in electronic format.
Peer reviewed journals display the symbol
Print / Email / Save
- Organise records using the box at the end of the list.
- Records are available as html, tagged text (i.e. with field codes), plain text or xml.
- Print, save or email records in the preferred format.
- Pages can be printed or emailed using the Print or Send Page option in the browser.
Thesaurus
- Use the thesaurus to find the best search terms for concepts and places.
