Logging on
Access is via the University network or Remote Access. No password is required other than your JCU internet login and password.
Getting Started
- Select the subject area you wish to search, then select Quick Search or Advanced Search.
- Select the database(s) you wish to search from the list displayed.
- Online Help is available from a link in the top right hand corner of the screen. Search Tips also provide help.
- Searches are not case sensitive; you don't need to use capital letters.
- Truncate words using *, e.g. conserv* finds all words starting with conserv
- See Combining Search Words for help in using Boolean operators AND, OR etc.
Quick Search
- Enter a search term (single word or multiple words) in the query box
- Type in an exact phrase using "..... " or use and to combine search terms
- You can limit your search by specifying a date range
- Click the Search button
Advanced Search
- Build a search strategy. Drop-down boxes allow you to specify the fields in which words should appear.
- Boolean operators AND, OR and NOT are used.
- Proximity searching e.g. (adolescent) within 4 (behavior).
- Specify date range, sort method, and record format.
Thesaurus Search
- Available from either the Quick Search or Advanced Search screens
- Browse the Thesaurus, Rotated Index or Alphabetical Index - explanations of these are on the screen
- Choice of thesaurus is determined by the database(s) selected
Search Results.
- Your results will display in groups of 10. You can change the number of results per page to 25 or 50.
- You can edit your search query by using Edit Search.
- You can change the display format at the bottom of the page. e.g. Short Format, Full Format, Custom Format.
- To mark records, click in the box to the left of the record.
- After you mark the records click on the Save, Print or Email Results and choose which format you want your results in.
Save, Print or Email Results
- Specify your record format before clicking on Save/Print/Email Records
- Save your records to disk, display them in a text file for printing, or email them.
Search History / Alert
- Available from Advanced Search mode --
- You can view your search history, combine searches, or recall search strategies saved previously.
- To combine searches following the search tips, eg #1 or #2 and (new search)
- Searches may be saved and recalled at a later time.
- Searches may also be saved as Alert. Each week the search will look for new content and results emailed to you.
