Searching

Table of Contents search
Click on the Laws of Australia folder to open the Table of Contents for that database. A list of chapters now appears. Select the appropriate chapter and click on its folder icon to break the chapter into progressively smaller sections. When the folder icon is replaced by a page icon the folder is fully expanded and you can now click on the page icon or its title to display the text.
Note that the General Index may be accessed through the Table of Contents. Select your topic in the index and click on the page link to display the text.
To collapse a folder click on the open folder icon.

Advanced search
Although the Global Search form appears on the opening screen many users find that the Advanced Search is easier to use and it is recommended that students try this first.
Before beginning a search make sure you have selected a database. (See Selecting a database above).
To access the Advanced Search form click on the Select Search Form menu at the top of the left frame and select Advanced Search.

  • Enter search terms in one or more of the search boxes.
  • Enter search terms terms in the containing all these words box to retrieve documents containing the words anywhere in the document. This may sometimes result in a large number of irrelevant hits.
  • Enter search terms in the containing these words near each other box to retrieve documents in which the words occur close to each other. (This is recommended as a good method of performing a general search).
  • Tick the Find alternate word forms option to retrieve all words beginning with the same stem eg negligent, negligence.
  • Set the Show context in the search results list to On by selecting a word number. (This will make it easier to judge the relevance of results in the hit list).
  • Select the database to be searched, eg Laws of Australia.
  • Click Search.

Global Search
This is the default search form which appears on the opening screen. Use this form to conduct a more complex search, eg to search multiple phrases or combinations of phrases and words using Boolean and proximity operators. Click on the Operators link above the search box to see a full list of operators and their uses.
