Project MUSE focuses on the arts, humanities, social
sciences and maths. JCU only subscribes to the 40+ full-text journals
published by John Hopkins University Press. We have access to
abstracts and citations for the other journals in this database.
Access Project MUSE at http://muse.jhu.edu/muse.html,
or via the Library Resources web page, or find individual titles
in Tropicat. Off-campus users should first go to the remote
access page: http://www.library.jcu.edu.au/Resources/remoteaccess.shtml
Before you begin your search
Carefully define your search terms - these are
key words and phrases that describe the topic you are researching.
The Library's online VISA tutorial will help you define search
terms and use search operators and fields: http://library.jcu.edu.au/VISA/
Understanding search fields
Restricting your search to certain fields can
help narrow it. The default is to search for your terms in All
fields (w/text). Alternatively, you can choose one of the field
options from the drop down menu. For more detailed information
on Project MUSE search fields, click on the question mark beside
the box.
Understanding search operators
The search operators, and, or, exact match and not can be selected
to narrow or broaden your search. Do not enter these terms in
the search box.
- Combining search terms with "and" narrows your
search (eg. painting "and" sculpture only retrieves
articles that contain both painting and sculpture).
- Combining search terms with the operator "or" will
retrieve articles that contain either of the terms - broadening
your search.
- Using the operator "exact match" will retrieve only
articles that contain your exact phrase as entered into the
search box,
- Using the operator "not" will narrow your search
by retrieving only articles that contain painting but not sculpture
(not is only available in Advanced Search)
- You can also truncate search terms using an asterisk * For
example, use run* to find run, runs, runners, running etc

Sorting your results
You can have your results sorted by rank publication date or
journal title in both Basic and Advanced search. Rank sorting,
by relevance or number of occurrences, is not perfect. For more
information, click on the question mark.
Limiting your search
When doing an Advanced Search, you can further narrow your results
by:
- Selecting the type of document you are looking for.
- Selecting a range of publication dates
- Selecting specific Journals (by title, subject group or Collection)
- For more information on limiting, click on the question mark.
Browsing Journals
To browse the contents of particular journal issues, click on
JOURNALS on the banner at the top of the page or the Journals
link on the home page. Select your journal from the list displayed.
Then select a volume/year and an issue. The contents page will
be displayed along with abstracts.
Viewing and Printing
From your search results (or from the contents screen in Journal
Browse), you can display and print the full article providing
it is a title to which JCU subscribes via Project MUSE. If you
are asked for a login and password, JCU does not have access to
full-text. Many articles are in PDF (Portable Document Format)
and require Adobe Acrobat software to read or print. For more
information check the InfoHelp FAQ http://www.library.jcu.edu.au/InfoHelp/faq.shtml
