Citation analysis is a quality indicator in ERA. You need to know how to calculate the number of times your published research has been cited by other researchers.

How many times your publications have been cited
ISI's Web of Science is the major database for citation information. It covers a range of disciplines and includes citation indexes for science, social science, arts and humanities.

If your subject area is not adequately covered by Web of Science you will need to search other databases that include citation information. Google Scholar can also be checked to determine the academic impact of your publications. The following guides provide information about the databases recommended for your subject area and how to effectively use them:

Tracking how often each of your papers is cited
In some databases it is possible to request an email notification to let you know when your document is cited in other documents within that database. This is usually called a Citation Alert and you need to set up an alert for each individual paper. For example, in Web of Science simply navigate to the full record for your article and then select Create citation alert . You will need to Register to use this service.
