How to Borrow
Take the items you wish to borrow and your JCU ID card or borrower card to the AutoLoans machine, or to Lending Services staff (Townsville) or Library Services staff (Cairns).A date due receipt is produced for all items borrowed.
Special loan conditions apply to MultiMedia Equipment.
Library materials from the Periodicals, Reference and Special Collections are available for loan only in exceptional circumstances, and with the permission of InfoHelp staff.
Curriculum Collection materials may be borrowed as part of the limits specified for JCU staff and students.
When to Borrow
Lending Services close 15 minutes before the advertised Library Building closing hours. Please listen for announcements concerning closing times.Check notice boards or enquire at the Lending Services and InfoHelp Desks for details of Library hours.
Loan Conditions
Borrowers must use their current JCU ID card or borrower card.Borrowers accept complete responsibility for the care of the library materials borrowed and for their return. All Library materials must be returned in good condition to the designated place on or before the due date or time indicated. Library materials will be deemed not to have been returned until such times as the transaction has been recorded by Lending Services staff.
Borrowers must comply with all borrowing conditions and policies. Copies of the Library Rules, Policies and Conditions are available from all service points within the Library upon request.

Not For Loan
- Material in the Reference Collection and Special Collections.
- Serials: i.e. periodicals, journals, newspapers.
- Maps and atlases.
- Microform materials.
- Rare books and other material in closed access.
Returning Books
- After-hours return items to the Library via the book return chutes near the main entrance.
- During library opening times books are to be returned using the Autoloans Units located inside the Librar.
- Items left on trolleys, desks or shelves are not recorded as returned.
To Renew Items:
A courtesy email will be sent reminding you to return or renew all items 1 day after the due date. The Library is not responsible for non-receipt of email messages. You cannot dispute a penalty because you have not received a notice. Overdue charges will not be charged for items renewed on this date (with the exception of short term loans).
Via the Web
- Click on the link to Tropicat
- Click on the My Library Information tab
- Enter your Library barcode or student ID number (located on your student ID card) and click Login.
- Click on Items on Loan on the My Library Information navigation bar.
- Select the items you want to renew by clicking on the checkboxes beside them.
- Click Renew - the Due Date column will display your new due date.
- Items can be renewed four times via the web.
In Person
- Items can be renewed with Library barcode or student ID number at Autoloans.
- Present ID/borrower card to Lending Services staff
By Phone
- Phone the Townsville Library (4781 6870) or the Cairns Library (4042 1020) and be ready to quote your Library barcode, borrower number or Student ID number .
Please note:
- It is your responsibility to note the new due date.
- You may extend three times without Lending Services sighting the items.
- After three non-sighted renewals you must present the items at Lending Services for renewal, or return via the chutes.
- It is your responsibility to maintain count of non-sighted extensions.
- A loan will not be extended if another user has placed a hold on the item.
Fees
- Late return fees accumulate at the rate of 50 cents per item per day overdue to a maximum of $25 per transaction, except for a Short Term Loan items.
- When a Short Term Loan item becomes overdue a $10 late return fee is imposed. An additional $25 charge may be imposed on Short Term Loan items overdue by 48 hours.
- Higher charges apply to Multimedia equipment, see Multimedia Equipment Loans for details.
- Library fines are not subject to GST.
Penalties
- Failure to return a recalled item by the revised due date will result in a late return fee.
- Borrowing privileges are suspended for non-payment of charges.
- Results and re-enrolment may be withheld until outstanding charges are resolved.
Debt Collection
- The Library reserves the right to recover library materials and payment of outstanding fees over $50.
Payment
- If an item is not returned or renewed promptly, it will be deemed lost, and the borrower will be charged for a replacement item plus a non-refundable service fee of $20.
- Library charges need to be paid once they reach $5.00.
- Payments can be made in person, or by telephoning or emailing with credit card details, or by mailing a cheque or money order. See contact details below.

Requests
Items which are on loan may be reserved by placing a request.
To place a request, find the item in Tropicat (the JCU Library catalogue) and follow the instructions. If you require assistance, enquire at InfoHelp.
Off campus students can send requests to the Off Campus Service via Tropicat (the library catalogue). Visit the off campus website for instructions.
Books from the New Books display in Townsville may also be reserved by placing a request. New Books on display in Cairns can be borrowed immediately.
If an item is on a longer loan (eg. teaching period), you may still borrow it. Place a request and the item will be recalled.
Short Term Loans
2 Day Loan
- items can be borrowed for 2 days (extensions available).
- items are shelved in the Main Library Collection, on open shelving.
2 Hour Loan
- Items are on closed access at Lending Services
- Items can be borrowed for 2 hours or on an overnight loan from Lending Services
- One item may be borrowed half an hour before Library closing time and returned half an hour after opening the next day
- All items must be returned to staff at the Lending Services Desk.

Course readings are available electronically via Reserve Online
General Conditions
- Lending Services uses email where available for all notices.
- Bags and cases may be taken into the Library Building.
- Anyone within the Library may be requested to present their books, bags, folders etc. for examination by Library staff.
- Students and staff must return all Library materials before they leave the University.
- Library charges may be subject to GST.
Fax Services
- Townsville students can send faxes from Lending Services.
- Within Australia: $2.00 for the 1st page and $1.00 for each page thereafter.
- Overseas: $5.00 for the 1st page and $2.00 for each page thereafter.
- No faxes can be received.
- Payments to be made with funds from a Copy Card.
Further Enquiries
Call Lending Services at the Townsville Library or Cairns Library Services to discuss any difficulties before items become overdue. Exceptions may be made where evidence of illness or personal crisis can be produced.
