Access to the Catalogue
Tropicat is the online public access catalogue of James Cook University Library. Go to Tropicat
- All printed, electronic and audio-visual resources held by the Library are listed in Tropicat.
- By using the online catalogue you will be able to see if the Library holds a particular item, where it is located, its call number, and if it is checked in.
- Do not place holds on items that are out on loan. Contact the Off Campus Officer who will place the hold on your behalf and send the item to you by mail.
If you experience difficulty accessing the catalogue email InfoHelp or call (07) 4781 5500
Literature Searches
Access to various electronic databases, providing up to date information from indexing, abstracting and full text services, is available via Library Resources on the Library & Computing Services homepage. These can be accessed remotely using your JCU login and password. If you need help using the library's electronic databases, please contact your faculty librarian or InfoHelp on 07 4781 5500 or Email: Infohelp@jcu.edu.au
How to request books
Off Campus Library Service users may request books by completing the Online Request Form or by sending a request to the Off Campus Service via Tropicat (the library catalogue). After searching for the book in Tropicat use the form at the bottom of the screen to type in the item(s) numbers, your name and student number and email to offcampus@jcu.edu.au. See example below.

To allow delivery time in both directions, Off Campus students receive a loan period 2 weeks longer than the corresponding On Campus student category, with the exception of Masters and Doctorates who receive semester loans.
- The Library does not send books overseas.
- The Library will pay the outward postage costs.
- Borrowers are responsible for the return postage costs.
- Books must be received back in Townsville by the due date.
- Return fees accumulate on overdue items. See penalties for more information.
- The Library uses a "pay as you go" system of library charges.
- Outstanding charges must be cleared before any further loans, extensions or hold transactions.
- Library charges may
be paid by telephone using a credit card. Contact Lending
Services on 07 4781 6870.
- You can extend your loans, 24 hours a day 7 days a week, via Tropicat. You may also contact the Off Campus Officer, or Lending Services on 07 4781 4380, during working hours.
- Loans may be extended three times. A loan cannot be extended if another user has placed a hold on the item.
How to request photocopies of material held at JCU
Under Section 49 of the Copyright Act, the University Library may photocopy material for the purpose of supplying the copy to a library user who requires it for research or study.
The following may be copied:

- A "reasonable portion" of a published work.
A "reasonable portion" in relation to a literary, dramatic or musical work is:
- 10% of the number of pages in the edition containing the work (the edition itself must be 10 or more pages)
- A chapter, where the work is divided into chapters.
Complete the online Off Campus Request for Photocopy. The article or chapter will be sent to your email address.
