Online Search Service

The Online Search Service

The Online Search Service offers access to bibliographic and fulltext databases covering most areas of teaching and research within JCU. Mediated online searches are available for a fee. Online searches are primarily intended to provide access to indexing or abstracting services not freely available to library clients, or where the version available is unsatisfactory for the client's purposes.

Cost

Members of JCU are charged to recover external costs only. Costs vary but a typical search is likely to be $100-$200. Searches are available to non-JCU clients. These attract an additional charge of $80/hr, with a minimum 1 hour charge.

Arranging a Search

Initially you will need to contact the appropriate Faculty/School Librarian and complete a search request form after discussing your search requirements. Searches are performed by Faculty/School Librarians in close consultation with clients. Before commencing a search, they need to discuss with you details such as which database(s) will be most appropriate, the exact terminology for your search, and the likely cost. It is also valuable for you to be present during the search in case unexpected issues arise.

Delivery of Results

Some databases offer search results by email. In many cases your results can be printed or forwarded to your email address within a few hours of completing the search. In other cases the results are posted to the Library and forwarded to you on receipt. Results usually consist of a list of bibliographic references with abstracts.
