Objectives
The principal purpose of Short Term Loans is to ensure that students will have prompt, easy and reliable access to required reading materials for University courses.
Short Term Loans:- ensure a dynamic collection for undergraduate courses,
- ensure equitable sharing of items in heavy demand,
- provide additional security for vulnerable, highly sought after items,
- help the Library to identify, acquire and preserve materials needed for undergraduate courses,
- help teaching staff identify the resources that have been made available for their students,
Short Term Loans
Material is placed on Short Term Loan by academic staff members or at the discretion of the person in charge of the collection. All requests will be available as a 2 day loan. 2 Hour loans are available for very high use or high risk materials. Please consult with your Faculty/School Librarian to request inclusions in this category.
All items can be searched for in the Library's online public access catalogue, Tropicat. Search by Title begins with or Author.
2 Day Loan
- items can be borrowed for 2 days with one extension
- items are shelved in the main library collection, on open shelving.
2 Hour Loan
- Items are on closed access at Lending Services
- Library Staff may actively transfer items to 2 hour loan where there is evidence that many students are trying to access them (by evidence of holds placed or enquiries)
- Library Staff may actively transfer items out of 2 hour loan to a 2 day loan where there is evidence of a low level of use
- Items can be borrowed for 2 hours or on an overnight loan from Lending Services
- One item may be borrowed half an hour before Library closing time and returned half an hour after opening the next day
- All items must be returned to staff at the Lending Services Desk.
Fines
- A $10.00 overdue fine is imposed on all categories of short term loans.
Placing items on Short Term Loan
- For items held by the library, lecturers complete a Short Term Loan form (3 days notice required)
- Items not held by the library must be ordered via the Information Resources purchase request form, indicating the subject code and that the item is to be forwarded to Lending Services when received (6 months notice required).
