Who can use the Library?
The primary objective of the University Library is to meet the information needs of the staff and students of James Cook University. Schools are welcome to use the library collections and services in Townsville and Cairns within the guidelines outlined on this page.Further information about the Library, its collections and policies is available in printed handouts and on the Library's web site.
Students under 15 years of age must be accompanied by an adult.
What does the Library offer?
The Library's collections consist of over 600,000 items and include a wide range of materials such as books, journals, and dvds.To photocopy you will need to purchase a $3 card and then add credit to the card. Photocopying is 12cents/A4 page. Other services are also available. The JCU website provides access to a wide range of information about the university, however access to online resources such as journal databases is available to JCU staff and students only.
To find library items you need to use the online catalogue known as Tropicat which lists all the items held in the JCU collections. Tropicat can be searched from any computer connected to the internet.
Some material held in special collections may have restricted use conditions.
Community Borrowers
Adult members of the local community, and Grade 11 and 12 students, are entitled to become Community Borrowers. Fees apply.Community Borrowers are able to borrow up to five items from the general collections for two weeks.
Your school or other organisation can become a Corporate Borrower. This entitles the organisation to four borrower cards. Fees apply.
There is also an Associate Borrower category for students of Queensland tertiary institutions and full-time TAFE students.

Individual Students
Students are welcome to visit the Library. They may use the collections within the building without charge. Staff at the InfoHelp desk on the first floor will attempt to provide ready reference assistance, other duties permitting.Schools Visiting the Library
School groups are welcome to visit the Library. Please inform the Librarian (Schools Liaison) well in advance of any groups intending to visit, by phoning Helen Hooper on 4781 4381.
Self-Guided Tour booklets and a range of other handouts are available, as well as online directions and floor plans.
All visiting groups must be accompanied by a teacher or parent.
Teachers and students using the library for assignments and research are expected to familiarise themselves prior to their visit with the library's layout and resources from guides available from the Library and on the Web.
Proposed visits to the library should be discussed with the school's teacher-librarian, to ensure resources held by the school are not overlooked.
Extended assistance to identify appropriate resource materials may be considered on the advice of a teacher-librarian indicating that the school library's resources have been exhausted.
