The Anton Breinl Centre

The Anton Breinl Centre specialises in research into the public health problems of tropical Australia and its near neighbours. It was established by James Cook University in 1987 as the Tropical Health Surveillance Unit, and re-named as the Anton Breinl Centre for Tropical Health and Medicine in 1988.

The Centre is named after Dr Anton Breinl (1880-1944), the first director of the Australian Institute of Tropical Medicine, set up by the University of Sydney in 1909 and located in Townsville. Dr Breinl was director of the Institute from 1910 until 1920. In 1910 he was awarded the Mary Kingsley medal for research in tropical medicine.

From 1987 until 2002 the Anton Breinl Centre occupied the site of the earlier institute in the grounds of the Townsville General Hospital in North Ward.
