Dagworth Station Records
Copies of the Dagworth Station records held by James Cook University Library Archives have been donated by Head of the Department of History and Politics, Professor Brian Dalton at the time of his retirement in 1989.
Sister Margaret Lyons (a tutor in Modern Languages, James Cook University) brought Gerard Lyons (first cousin of Sister Margaret Lyons) in with the station diaries to the History Department in November 1988.
Dagworth was established in the period from 1879 to 1884 and its history of ownership can be traced in Pughs Almanac from 1887 until 1925. In 1917, (as noted in History of Queensland : Its People and Industries V. III compiled by Matt Fox) Myles Lyons (Sister Margaret Lyons grandfather) bought Dagworth from Mr Cope. The station was quite large and ran shorthorn cattle. In 1917, according to the Queensland Pastoral Directory in Pughs Almanac, there were 171 horses and 8,891 cattle on the station.
In 1917, Dagworth was made up from three stations:
1. Eveleigh
2. Talaroo
3. Vanleigh (spelling uncertain)
In 1924 Talaroo was subdivided from Dagworth.
Sister Lyons father Frank Lyons managed the Station from 1921 to 1943. Although the Dagworth was not owned by the Lyons family for a while Jim Lyons of Talaroo managed to buy it back. At present, Dagworth Station is owned by Billy Tincknell and Frances (nee Frances Lyons - Gerard Lyons sister).
