Townsville Gas and Coke Company

On 25 July 1881, a group of Townsville citizens met and completed the formation of the Townsville Gas and Coke Company Limited. The initial capital of the Company was 10,000 pounds raised through the issue of ordinary shares of one pound value.

Gas was first reticulated on 24 February 1883. By 1939 more than 4,500 customers were using reticulated gas in Townsville. The gas was produced from coal.

This collection consists of correspondence to and from the Company between 1904 and 1916 and reports about the flood waters from the Ross Riverbetween 1887 and 1910.
