Trant Family
The Trand family held a prominent position in the County of Kerry, especially around Dingle and Ventry, from early in the 13th century. Branches of the family are now domiciled in America and Australiea as well as Ireland.
Townsville is linked to this family through Sarah and Elizabeth Anne Trans, daughters of Thomas Trant and Maryanne Chute of Dingle, Co. Kerry. Sarah, the elder daughter, married Richard Sheridan Brinsley and came to Queensland with him and her two daughters in 1860. Elizabeth Anne, orphaned in 1851, was reared by her uncle, Francis Bernard Chute and his wife Jane Rowan, but later joined her sister in Queensland where she married Michael Hanrahan of Redbank. Eventually Sarah and Richard Brinsley settled in Townsville, and it was whilst visiting her sister there that Elizabeth Anne Trant died on 2nd September, 1904.
