Introduction

This guide is a select listing of information resources in Law. For a more comprehensive view of the Library's collection please consult our online catalogue, Tropicat. A more complete, general guide to finding information is also available from InfoHelp. More specialised legal research guides are available. Ask at InfoHelp for details. The location prefix R used in the guide designates the Reference Collection. Items are held in both Townsville and Cairns unless otherwise indicated.

Cases

Reports of significant cases decided by the courts are published in volumes known as law reports. A reference (also called a citation) to a report of a case looks like this:

(a) Names of the parties involved in the case. The first name is the name of the person, company, or other legal body bringing the action. The v is the shortened form of "versus" meaning against.
(b) A year and/or volume number.
(c) An abbreviation of the name of the law report series in which the case is reported.
(d) A page number.

To locate this case in the Library:

  1. Refer to Abbreviations for law students* to find the full name of the law report series represented by the abbreviation CLR
  2. Note the call number given for the report series
  3. Go to that number on the Library shelves
  4. Select volume 182
  5. Turn to page 104

AustLII (Australasian Legal Information Institute) http://www.austlii.edu.au is one of the most important Internet sites for Australian law material, and also provides links to important overseas sites.
