This guide is a select listing of information resources in History, including both Australian history and world history. For a more comprehensive view of the Library's collection please consult our online catalogue, Tropicat. A more complete, general guide to finding information is also available from InfoHelp.

CD-ROM Databases

Some journal indexing and abstracting publications can be searched using CD-ROM. The CD-ROM service is free and operates on a self-service basis. Please ask at InfoHelp for details. NOTE: These discs are no longer current, but may be used, for example, if the Internet is not available.

Internet Database Services

Many journal indexing and abstracting services are available via the Internet. Some services also provide the full text of journal articles. Certain databases may require passwords, which can be obtained from InfoHelp on presentation of your student card, or can be sent to your JCU email address.

Some databases that you may find particularly useful for History are:

  • Current Contents Connect - Covers most disciplines and provides access to tables of contents and bibliographic data from issues of more than 7,500 international journals.
  • FirstSearch - Provides access to more than 40 different database services, including Social Sciences Abstracts.
  • Informit Online - Indexes Australian databases, most relevant are: APAIS, AIATSIS databases, AHB, AHRR, AUSTGUIDE, AUSCHRON, FNQ, and MHLIST.
  • InfoTrac - Search and retrieve index citations, abstracts, and selected full text articles via Expanded Academic ASAP International.
  • JSTOR - A comprehensive archive of important scholarly journals in the Arts and Sciences including history.
  • Project Muse - Access 40+ full text scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences & mathematics, published by John Hopkins University Press.
  • Web of Knowledge - Covers a broad range of relevant subject areas. Databases include Social Sciences Citation Index and Arts & Humanities Citation Index

Electronic Journals

Most full text electronic journals subscribed to by the library are listed in Tropicat. An alphabetical list of ejournals is also available. Access may be by individual title, or by service provider, e.g. Infotrac. If an appropriate journal title is unknown, it is recommended that some of the listed databases be searched for appropriate journal articles. Please contact InfoHelp for assistance.
Note that the library holds many titles in print; some are available in both print and electronic versions.
