This guide is a select listing of information resources in Political Science, including both Australian and World sources. For a more comprehensive view of the Library's collection please consult our online catalogue, Tropicat. A more complete, general guide to finding information is also available from InfoHelp.

The location prefix R used in the guide designates the Reference Collection. Items are held in both Townsville (TSV) and Cairns (CNS) unless otherwise indicated.

Internet Database Services

Many journal indexing and abstracting services are available via the Internet. Some services also provide the full text of journal articles. Certain databases may require passwords, which can be obtained from InfoHelp on presentation of your student card, or can be sent to your JCU email address.

Some databases that you may find particularly useful for Political Science are:

  • AltPressIndex - Indexes journals covering cultural, economic, political & social change. Via FirstSearch and requires a password from Infohelp.
  • AHB (Informit Online) - Australian Heritage Information, provides access to information on Australia's natural and cultural environment.
  • AHRR (Informit Online) - A list of paper-based records held in private collections within Australia.
  • APAIS (Informit Online) - Australian Public Affairs Information Service indexes current journals and newspapers in Australia and overseas for material on Australia's political, economic, legal, social and cultural affairs.
  • APAFT (Informit Online) - Australian Public Affairs Full Text, a subset of APAIS
  • Auschron (Informit Online) - A chronology of events in Australian history.
  • Blackwells Publishing Journals online - Database with coverage in Humanities, Social Sciences and Science with full text access to subscribed journals.
  • Current Contents Connect - Covers most disciplines including arts and humanities and provides access to tables of contents and bibliographic data from many journals.
  • Expanded Academic (InfoTrac) - Indexes periodical articles from a broad range of subject areas and includes the full-text forsubscribed journals.
  • JSTOR - Archived social sciences, humanities and science journals, some dating from the late 1800s to the late 1990s and is full text.
  • MIHILIST (Informit Online) - The Australasian Military History database, indexes material on the pre-1980 military history of Australia, New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.
  • Oxford Journals Online - Tables of contents, abstracts and the full text articles for most of the journals published by the Oxford University Press. Coverage of about 150 titles in all areas of science, the arts and humanities, will gradually increase as more OUP titles are published online.
  • Project Muse - Access 40+ scholarly journals in the humanities, social sciences and mathematics (full-text).

Electronic Journals

Most full text electronic journals subscribed to by the library are listed in Tropicat. An alphabetical list of ejournals is also available. Access may be by individual title, or by service provider, e.g. Infotrac. Please contact InfoHelp if passwords are required.
Note that the library holds many titles in print; some are available in both print and electronic versions.
