  • FAMILY (Australian Family & Society Abstracts Database) - Produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, FAMILY is a bibliographic database that indexes material on research, policy and practice issues about, or of relevance to, Australian families. This includes areas such as: children, youth, the aged, marriage, divorce, adoption, foster care, counselling and therapy, unemployment, family law, health, housing, social change, social issues, social and community services. The Family Thesaurus is a useful guide to the terms used for indexing and retrieving information in the FAMILY database.

    H & S (Health & Society Database) - Produced by the Australian Institute of Family Studies, covers all aspects of family health, and is a subset of the FAMILY database.

    APAIS (Australian Public Affairs Information Service) - Indexes a wide range of periodicals, newspapers, scholarly journals, conference papers and books from the areas of current affairs, economics, humanities, law, literature, politics and social sciences.

    APAIS-Health - Is a subset of APAIS. It focuses on items of relevance to the health industry, including community attitudes to health issues in Australia.

    MAIS (Multicultural Australia & Immigration Studies) - Subject coverage includes immigration, emigration, multiculturalism, ethnicity, racism, multicultural education, migrant health, welfare and social services, refugees and population studies.

    DRUG (Drug Database) - Produced by the Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia, DRUG covers political, social, economic, psychological and legal aspects of prevention and treatment of alcohol and other drug abuse.

    ATSIS (Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Subset Databases) - Educational, legal, health, family, criminal and heritage matters are covered exclusively as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander subsets of the relevant databases.

    AGIS (Attorney-General's Information Service) - Covers all aspects of law, including: criminal law, constitutional law, environmental law, copyright law, family law, legal aid and human rights.

    CINCH (Australian Criminology Database) - By the Australian Institute of Criminology, CINCH covers all aspects of crime and criminal justice, including corrections, crime prevention, criminal law, criminology, juvenile justice, law enforcement, police and victims of crime.

  • Sociological Abstracts - Covers articles relevant to sociology, anthropology, economics, education, health & medicine, and social psychology.
  • Social Services Abstracts - Covers articles relevant to social work, social services and community welfare. Also provides a link to Social Services InfoNet, which contains hundreds of carefully screened Internet resources relating to topics in social work and social services.

    Full Text Databases and Electronic Journals

    • InfoTrac - Indexes over 2,000 journals with full-text articles from over half available online.
    • ProQuest 5000 - Social Sciences Plus indexes and abstracts more than 400 titles, with about half of those available in full text.
    • JCU Electronic Journals  - Alphabetical listing of full-text journals available to members of James Cook University. You can also link directly to journals via the web version of the JCU Library Catalogue (Tropicat) .

    Australian Government Entry Point  - Provides access to all Commonwealth authorised information and services.
    Commonwealth Department of Family & Community Services  - (Formerly the Department of Social Security).  Contains information on programs, policies, research, legislation, Annual Report, and other publications.
    Department of Families QLD  - A Queensland government organisation containing links to useful information for parents & family, young people, seniors, kids, and includes publications.
    Queensland Health  - Full-text of health topic documents, guide to health services and locations, and useful links to related sites.
    Centrelink  - This site is aimed primarily at recipients of Social Security Payments.  It provides information on services and publications by Social Security departments (Family & Community Services; Education, Training and Youth Affairs; Health and Family Services; Primary Industries and Energy; and Transport and Regional Services).
    Australian Institute of Family Studies  - The Institute is a Commonwealth statutory authority established in 1980 to promote the identification and understanding of factors affecting marital and family stability in Australia.  This site contains media releases, research programs, topical databases, and full-text of the Family Matters journal.
    Child Support Agency (CSA)  - This site provides access to the latest forms, publications, brochures, leaflets, and other information on CSA issues.
    Australian Bureau of Statistics  - Australia's official statistical organisation.  Most relevant ABS Catalogue heading is 4. Social Statistics. Also available is AusStats, the ABS standard product range online.
    Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW)  - The AIHW is an independent health and welfare statistics and information agency in the Commonwealth of Australia's Health & Aged Care Portfolio.  Includes full-text of statistical releases, data, journals, and other publications.

    JCU School of Social Work and Community Welfare  - Information on staff, courses, and research at James Cook University, School of Social Work & Community Welfare.
    Australian Association of Social Workers  - Has full-text of Australian Social Work journal, as well as membership services, conference dates, reports, and media releases.
    Australian Institute of Welfare and Community Workers Inc. - The recognised professional body for welfare and community workers in Australia.

    Australian Council of Social Service (ACOSS)  - ACOSS is the national peak council of the community welfare sector in Australia - the principal voice of low income and disadvantaged people in social and economic policy matters.
    Domestic Violence Resource Centre  - A Queensland resource for the public, professionals, groups, and the media to access information and education on domestic violence.  Services offered include counselling, support groups, library, and other information.
    Brotherhood of St. Laurence  - A christian welfare agency tackling the causes and effects of poverty by providing practical services, independent research, policy development, and social action.
    NATSEM: National Centre for Social & Economic Modelling  - NATSEM's key area of expertise lies in developing microsimulation models and in undertaking a wide range of social and economic research.  Includes full-text of papers covering income distribution, housing, social and health services, low income families, youth and aging.

    NASW Online  - The National Association of Social Workers.  Is known as one of the largest membership organisations of professional social workers in the world.  This site contains links to publications, services, and resources.
    American Counseling Association  - Links to books, policies, code of ethics, and standards of practice.
    British Association of Social Workers  - Press releases, policy documents, publications, and special interest groups.
    UNICEF  - Advocates and works for the protection of children's rights.  Has many useful links.

    Subject Directories

    Intute - Social Sciences - Is an online catalogue of thousands of high quality Internet resources relevant to social science education and research.  Every resource has been selected and described by a librarian or subject specialist.
    Information for Practice  - Search or browse topics relating to both Australian and international government publications and organisations. It contains news and resources from around the world for social workers.
    The Info Xchange  - Is an online, computer-based community information network offering access to accurate, up-to-date information on Community Support Services and related issues 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.  Also has a resource of useful website links.
    BUBL Link -Social Welfare - A list of internet resouces grouped in catalogue number order. Search by subject or classification number.

    Adoption

    Adoption Australia Origins - An organisation that supports those separated by adoption. It is a comprehensive site with many interesting links.
    Jigsaw Queensland - An association for adopted persons, birth/relinquishing parents and adoptive parents.
    Adoptee Internet Library - A vast list of links related to adoptees by the Adoptee Rights Organisation.
    Child Welfare Information Gateway  - This is a comprehensive resource on all aspects of adoption in the United States and includes information and data for infant, intercountry, and special needs adoption, and organisation directories and bibliographic databases. Also contains resources on child abuse and neglect.
    The Evan B. Donaldson Adoption Institute - An American site aimed at adoption professionals or those with an interest in adoption, which provides up-to-date information on adoption research, policy and practice. There is a useful database of adoption resources dating back to 1938, which provides abstracts of articles on a variety of adoption categories.

    Ageing

    Queensland Government - Seniors - A site under the The Department of Communities which is a Queensland Government agency committed to promoting and supporting human services to Queenslanders. It contains information on state government concessions, publications, statistics, resources and other useful information.
    Aged and Community Services Australia - Provides national leadership to church, charitable and community providers of aged and community services.
    COTA National Seniors - An independent consumer organisation based on the partnership between Councils on the Ageing and National Seniors Association. The organisations aim is to protect and promote the well-being of all older people.
    Department of Health and Aged Care - Australian Government department containing publications, as well as links to relevant agencies, programs, and other health sites.
    Aged Care - Australian links on aged care facilities and services, such as community care, retirement villages, health, and employment.
    About Seniors - A comprehensive site for senior citizens that offers links to government departments, national and state associations, community service groups, and seniors interests and hobbies.
    Alzheimer's Australia - Contains information help sheets, press releases, publications and details of state branches.
    The Australian Association of Gerontology - A charitable organisation devoted to raising and allocating funds for research into ageing.  Includes articles, releases, reports and a review of current literature.

    Children

    National Child Protection Clearinghouse - An Australian organisation that collects, shares, monitors, and distributes information on the prevention of child abuse and neglect.
    Kids Help Line - A national telephone counselling service for young people aged 5-18 years.  Contains useful Infosheets on a range of issues and problems.
    Child Welfare Information Gateway - Material is mainly from the United States.  Contains information on Child Abuse and Neglect and Adoption. Child Welfare Information Gateway provides access to information and resources to help protect children and strengthen families.
    Child Welfare - A U.S. gateway to child welfare information.

    Criminology

    The Australian Institute of Criminology  - The national focus for  the study of crime and criminal justice in Australia.
    Crime and Misconduct Commission - The Crime and Misconduct Commission (CMC) was formed on 1 January 2002 with the merger of the Criminal Justice Commission (CJC) and the Queensland Crime Commission (QCC). Its purpose is to combat and reduce major crime in Queensland, improve the integrity of the Queensland public sector, and reduce the incidence of misconduct in the Queensland public sector.
    National Criminal Justice Reference Service (NCJRS) - Is one of the most extensive sources of information on criminal and juvenile justice in the world, providing services to an international community of policy makers and professionals.
    NCJRS Abstracts Database  - National Criminal Justice Reference Service database contains abstracts of more than 140,000 criminal justice publications, including reports, books, journal articles, and unpublished research.  Subject areas include corrections, courts, drugs and crime, law enforcement, juvenile justice, crime statistics, and victims of crime.

    Drugs & Alcohol

    Australian Drug Foundation - An independent nonprofit organisation working to prevent and reduce alcohol and drug problems in the Australian community.  The Centre for Youth Drug Studies is also contained in this site, and is the only organisation in Australia to focus solely on drug use and youth.
    Alcohol and Other Drugs Council of Australia - The peak, national non-government organisation representing the interests of the alcohol and other drugs field.
    National Alcohol Campaign - Contains information for parents, the media, and service providers.
    Health Concerns - Drug and Alcohol - This site is part of the NSW Health Department, and has comprehensive information on specific drugs and their harmful effects. 
    National Clearinghouse for Alcohol & Drug Information - From the US Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services.
    Narcotics Anonymous - This American-based site offers links to Narcotics Anonymous groups around the world. Included is the 12-step program adapted from Alcoholics Anonymous.

    Euthanasia

    Voluntary Euthanasia Society of Victoria  - Contains information on the legal situation in Victoria and Australia, including the Northern Territory Rights of the Terminally Act, 1996.
    Euthanasia World Directory  - By the Euthanasia Research & Guidance Organisation, USA.
    World Federation of Right To Die Societies  - Represents all international organisations which are fighting for a person's right to die when terminally ill.

    Families & Family Law

    Social Security Policy and Legislation  - The Australian Social Security Act 1991 and Guide to the Act by the Commonwealth Department of Family & Community Services.

    Australian Human Rights & Civil Rights  - Information on human rights in Australia, and links to legal papers and human rights organisations.
    Human Rights & Equal Opportunity Commission  - Searchable database to resources on disability rights, sex discrimination, human rights, complaints, racial discrimination, and Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islanders.
    Amnesty International Australia - Latest News on Australian and Global Human Rights issues. This website provides an online library, newsletters and contact information for Amnesty International offices in Australia.
    Australian Human Rights Centre - The Australian Human Rights Centre is a Research Institute established to raise awareness and provide access to information about Human Rights. There is a link to the Australian Journal of Human Rights.
    Human Rights - This United Nations website features a number of resources on human rights. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights is available as well as links to documents, treaties, media releases and publication concerning International Human Rights.

    National Youth Suicide Prevention Strategy - By the Australian Institute of Family Studies and the Centre for Adolescent Health, to address the information and communication needs of those involved in youth suicide prevention.
    Australian Institute for Suicide Research & Prevention - Based at Griffith University, the AISRAP promotes and conducts research in all aspects of suicide prevention.
    Youth Suicide Prevention Kit - Contains fact sheets, risk factors, statistics, prevention activities, myths, and a bibliography.
    American Foundation for Suicide Prevention - This site includes useful bibliographies of  resources on different aspects of suicide behaviour.

    Youth & Adolescents

    The Source - Australian Youth Affairs  - Information for and about Australian youth developed by the Department of Employment, Training & Youth Affairs (DEETYA).  Includes career and job information, money, health issues, justice, and an excellent index to youth related organisations and agencies.
    Australian Clearinghouse for Youth Studies  - An excellent site which provides information products and services for health workers, policy makers, researchers, educators, youth workers, etc.  Contains a worldwide list of scholarly journals on youth and adolescence, and the Topics option and databases are extremely useful. ACYS also publish the journal Youth Studies Australia (305.23 P2).
    Database of Youth Organisations - Produced by ACYS, it identifies organisations in Australia which focus on youth issues or provide services to youth.
    The Australian Youth Foundation - An independent, non-government organisation that provides funding for projects that assist young Australians who are socially, financially, physically, or intellectually disadvantaged.  The site contains project information, statistics, policies, and research.
    A World of Prevention   - A worldwide directory of programs, research, references and resources dedicated to the prevention of youth problems and the promotion of youth development.
    National Youth Violence Prevention Resource Center - An electronic gateway to federal information on youth violence prevention and suicide in the U.S. From the home page, three audience levels are catered for: Parents & Guardians; Professionals; and Teens.
    School Violence Prevention - From the Center for Mental Health Services (U.S.), this site provides a comprehensive community-wide and school-wide approach "to promote the development of healthy behaviours, competence, and resilience in school aged children and youth, in order to decrease the level of violence in schools." It includes samples of model programs, information and links about violence prevention, publications about kids' behaviour and emotions for parents, and guides to dealing with emergencies.
    Youth Violence: A Report of the Surgeon General - Originally commissioned in response to the Columbine High School shootings, the Surgeon General's report on youth violence "examines the factors that lead young people to gravitate toward violence, reviews the factors that protect youth from perpetrating violence and identifies effective research-based preventative strategies." The report identifies 27 specific intervention programs that have shown themselves to be statistically successful, while also discussing many common myths about youth violence.
    Parenting Adolescents - Responses to questions about parenting teens and pre-teens. The responses are formulated by licensed clinical social workers. The site is searchable and includes links to additional resources as well as a free email newsletter.
