Welcome to the resources pages for the School of Creative Arts. This page looks at resources relevant to Music subjects (MU) and some pages that might be relevant to different subject strands.

The SoCA Highlights Blog is a great way to find new resources, or explore some of the older ones. It looks at interesting resources right across the Creative Arts disciplines, covering Visual Arts, Music, Photography, Digital Media and Theatre... among other things.   • General Information
  • If you are off campus login via Remote access
  • Australian Public Affairs Indexing Service (APAIS) - a broad multidisciplinary resource focusing on Australia. It provides full text of articles where available. Available via Informit.
  • Expanded Academic ASAP - indexes articles of general academic interest. Links to the full text of many journal articles. Available via InfoTrac.
  • Project Muse (Arts and Humanities) Full text coverage of hundreds of journals.
  • Music Index Online - A subject-author guide to music periodical literature covering over 800 international music periodicals and offering the researcher access to a wealth of historiographic, ethnographic, and musicological data. A broad range of subjects is indexed, including musicians, the history of music, forms of music, musical instruments from the earliest times to computer recordings, tapes, and performances are indexed. First performances and obituaries are noted.
  • Medieval Music Database - Managed by Latrobe University Library. This site has not been updated since 2004, but is building up for a new version due for release in 2008.
  • Naxos Music Library - This database provides access to over 5,000 CDs of music recordings which can be played online. You can search for music by genre, composer, title of piece, and other variables listed in the 'advanced search' option. Notes on the works and biographical information on composers and performers are also available. (Nb. You need Internet Explorer 6.0 and Media Player 9.0 to play the recordings.)
  • ProQuest - Proquest provides articles in abstract as well as full text across a range of subjects in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities - including music. Use the search box to find articles, or browse the broad subjects Music & musicians, Musical instruments and Types of music. The full-text journals include: The American Music Teacher, American Record Guide, Billboard, Downbeat, Guitar Player, The Instrumentalist , Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Keyboard, Music Educators Journal, Musical Times, Opera News, Perspectives of New Music, Rolling Stone, Strings, Teaching Music and Variety.
  • Web of Science- Includes Arts and Humanities Citation Index. One of the better databases for Arts subjects offered by JCU at present


  • Xrefer (now known as Credo Reference - This online, full text, reference library includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations, as well as subject specific titles from art, to literature, to law.
  • Grove Music Online - "Comprises the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition, edited by Stanley Sadie and John Tyrrell (London, 2001), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, edited by Stanley Sadie (London, 1992), and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition, edited by Barry Kernfeld (London, 2002). Articles that have been updated since their appearance in print are date-stamped in the upper right corner of the screen".


  • Intute: Arts and Humanities Gateway providing free online access to a variety of web pages for education and research. Over 115,000 high quality educational web resources selected and annotated by subject specialists at several UK universities
  • BUBL Link Catalogue of Internet Resources. Browsable by Dewey Decimal numbers.
  • Worldwide Internet Music Resources - Indiana University
  • WWW Sites of Interest to Musicologists - American Musicology Society

    This is not a complete list of the electronic journals available to music students through the Library. For more information, run a Power Search through Tropicat with the Journal/Newspaper Title Keyword "music", or a Subject Keyword "music" with the limits set to "serials". If there is a particular title you are looking for, search for it on Tropicat and you may find we have it.
