Welcome to the resources pages for the School of Creative Arts. This page looks at resources relevant to Music subjects (MU) and some pages that might be relevant to different subject strands.

The SoCA Highlights Blog is a great way to find new resources, or explore some of the older ones. It looks at interesting resources right across the Creative Arts disciplines, covering Visual Arts, Music, Photography, Digital Media and Theatre... among other things. Make sure you visit it every week or so to see what's out there in the big wild world of web.

• Electronic Databases Alphabetical listing of all databases available through JCU
• Database Guides to read online or printout to help in using internet resources.
• Australian Public Affairs Indexing Service (APAIS) - a broad multidisciplinary resource focusing on Australia. It provides full text of articles where available. Available via Informit.
• Expanded Academic ASAP - indexes articles of general academic interest. Links to the full text of many journal articles. Available via InfoTrac.
• Project Muse (Arts and Humanities) Full text coverage of hundreds of journals.
• Music Index Online - A subject-author guide to music periodical literature covering over 800 international music periodicals and offering the researcher access to a wealth of historiographic, ethnographic, and musicological data. A broad range of subjects is indexed, including musicians, the history of music, forms of music, musical instruments from the earliest times to computer recordings, tapes, and performances are indexed. First performances and obituaries are noted.
• Medieval Music Database - Managed by Latrobe University Library. This site has not been updated since 2004, but is building up for a new version due for release in 2008.
• Naxos Music Library - This database provides access to over 5,000 CDs of music recordings which can be played online. You can search for music by genre, composer, title of piece, and other variables listed in the 'advanced search' option. Notes on the works and biographical information on composers and performers are also available. (Nb. You need Internet Explorer 6.0 and Media Player 9.0 to play the recordings.)
• ProQuest - Proquest provides articles in abstract as well as full text across a range of subjects in the Sciences, Social Sciences and Humanities - including music. Use the search box to find articles, or browse the broad subjects Music & musicians, Musical instruments and Types of music. The full-text journals include: The American Music Teacher, American Record Guide, Billboard, Downbeat, Guitar Player, The Instrumentalist , Journal of the American Musicological Society, Journal of the Royal Musical Association, Keyboard, Music Educators Journal, Musical Times, Opera News, Perspectives of New Music, Rolling Stone, Strings, Teaching Music and Variety.
• Web of Science- Includes Arts and Humanities Citation Index. One of the better databases for Arts subjects offered by JCU at present



• Xrefer (now known as Credo Reference - This online, full text, reference library includes encyclopedias, dictionaries, thesauri and books of quotations, as well as subject specific titles from art, to literature, to law.
• Grove Music Online - "Comprises the full text of The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, second edition, edited by Stanley Sadie and John Tyrrell (London, 2001), The New Grove Dictionary of Opera, edited by Stanley Sadie (London, 1992), and The New Grove Dictionary of Jazz, second edition, edited by Barry Kernfeld (London, 2002). Articles that have been updated since their appearance in print are date-stamped in the upper right corner of the screen".



• Intute: Arts and Humanities Gateway providing free online access to a variety of web pages for education and research. Over 115,000 high quality educational web resources selected and annotated by subject specialists at several UK universities
• BUBL Link Catalogue of Internet Resources. Browsable by Dewey Decimal numbers.
• Worldwide Internet Music Resources - Indiana University
• WWW Sites of Interest to Musicologists - American Musicology Society



• Ask Search Engine - An alternative to Google and Yahoo. Uses a different search algorithm

A selection of media, culture and creative arts journals available online (Some are browsable online, others require access via JCU s E-Journal's page. For paper holdings and other other sources, check Tropicat.)

This is not a complete list of the electronic journals available to music students through the Library. For more information, run a Power Search through Tropicat with the Journal/Newspaper Title Keyword "music", or a Subject Keyword "music" with the limits set to "serials". If there is a particular title you are looking for, search for it on Tropicat and you may find we have it.

• All Music Guide - A commercial site that functions like a cross between IMDB and Amazon.com, providing information about artists, albums and composers as well as the opportunity to purchase the recordings
• Andante - A web-based magazine focusing on classical music
• Opera Glass - A resources providing detailed information about a large number of operas, offering libretti, synopses, source texts and performance histories, among other things. Hosted by Stanford University.
• World Wide Music Internet Resources - Resources list offered by the William and Gail Cook Music Library at the Indiana University School of Music. Some links are out of date, but many are still current.
• Atlas of Plucked Instruments - Gives descriptions of different types of plucked instruments. You can search my instrument type or by location.
• ABC Classic FM
• Classical Net - Reviews of more than 1650 CDs, 5500 files and nearly 4000 links to other classical music web sites
• Centre for the History of Music Theory and Literature - "brings together various activities, publications (both electronic and conventional), and projects centered at the Jacobs School of Music at Indiana University."
• Ricci Adam's misictheory.net - a good resource for music teachers working with beginners and children.
• Music History 102 - At the Internet Public Library.
• The Symphony: An Interactive Guide - Another good resource for Music teachers with school-age students.
• BluesNet - Some basic information about Blues artists
• The Red Hot Jazz Archive - A history of jazz before 1930, focusing mainly or performers
• A Jazz Improvisation Primer - An online version of the text by Marc Sabatella.
• A Passion for Jazz - Another good resource for Music Teachers
• Smithsonian Global Sound - A highly useful resource on folk and traditional music, put out by the Smithsonian Institute. Offers teaching resources such as lesson plans and music downloads.
• Operabase - A sort of database regarding opera companies and performances
• Aria Database - Information on over 1000 operatic arias
• Musicals 101.com - The Cyber Encyclopedia of Musical Theatre, TV and Film
• - Hosted by the University of Michigan's School of Information.
• Guide to Medieval and Renaissance Instruments. - Some good information, plus pictures and sound files
• Virtual Instrument Museum - Contains a lot of good information, some pictures and the occasional video.

Sheet Music

• Digital Music Collections - Assembled by the Harvard College Library. The Digital Audio Services are for Harvard staff and students only, but the links to sheet music repositories further down the page are open for public access.
• African-American Band Music - Sheet music and sound recordings from 1883-1923, supplied by the Library of Congress.
• WA Musical Memories Online - Contains PDFs and pictures of scores held in the Music and Performing Arts Library at the State Library of Western Australia
• Choral Public Domain Library - "One of the world's largest free sheet music sites"
