Indexing/Abstracting Databases

Off campus access is available for most databases and electronic journals. Simply click on this link, and follow the instructions. You will be returned to this page and can then simply click on the required resource to access it. If a password is required, this can be obtained from InfoHelp

  • PEDro - the physiotherapy evidence database. Index – This database identifies citation and abstracts details of randomised controlled trials and systematic reviews in physiotherapy.
  • MEDLINE via OvidSP - the premier database for every aspect of health
  • Medline - the premier database for every aspect of health via the PubMed service
  • CINAHL - Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature covering 1200+ journals. Via OvidSP
  • Sportdiscus - areas of sport: recreation, exercise physiology, sports medicine, coaching, physical fitness, the psychology, history and sociology of sport, training, and conditioning. Can also be found through OvidSP, but the most current issues are available via EBSCOHOST
  • Web of Science / Current Contents - indexes 8,500 of the world’s most cited journals across all disciplines
  • Informit - indexes published and unpublished Australian articles (password required from InfoHelp) including those in these health related databases:
    • AMI: Australasian Medical Index - covers 100+ Australian health and medical serials not indexed in Medline
    • APAIS: Health - covers legal, social, economic and ethical (but not clinical) aspects of Australian health and medicine
    • ATSIhealth (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Bibliography) - covers indigenous health
    • AusportMed - from the Australian Sports Commission covers medical and health issues in sport
    • DRUG - Alcohol and other Drugs Council of Australia (ADCA) covers the psychosocial aspects of substance abuse
    • Health & Society - covers health policy, services, social, ethical, psychological, and legal issues connected with health
    • RURAL - covers Rural and remote health issues
  • PsycINFO - indexes and abstracts the psychological literature
  • OTDBASE - an index and abstracts database covering c.20 key occupational therapy journals.
  • Sociological Abstracts - indexes and abstracts journal literature in sociology, social policy and related disciplines via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
  • ERIC - (Education Resources Information Center) via Cambridge Scientific Abstracts
  • Ingenta.com - search for journal articles (was UnCover Plus): online articles searches c5,500 electronic journals; fax/Ariel articles searches the Tables of Contents of c.28,000 print titles.

Full text databases

  • InfoTrac - indexes more than 2,000 journals with full-text articles from over half available online
  • ProQuest 5000 - another indexing and full-text database complementing InfoTrac
  • Blackwell Scientific - full text of Blackwell Scientific journals via Synergy
  • ScienceDirect - online access to 290 Elsevier, Harcourt and Academic Press journals (subsumes IDEAL)
  • Wiley Interscience - full text of Wiley journals
  • Anatomy TV- contains complete anatomical 3D models from skin to bone for various body parts. Includes biomechanical animations, dynamic MRI, and movie clips to supplement the 3D model. Leading practitioners in each field provide explanations of the illustrations.

  • Physical Therapy: TWS - Generic physiotherapy site that looks at a featured topic, has a physiotherapy forum, information about different diseases and injuries and provides links to other physiotherapy websites.

  • Australian Physiotherapy Council - This Council is the organisation which is responsible for the accreditation of Physiotherapy programs and also for the administration of the AECOP examination to assess overseas trained physiotherapists
  • Physiotherapists Board of Queensland - The Physiotherapists Board of Queensland is a statutory body, established under the Physiotherapists Registration Act 2001, to regulate the practice of physiotherapy in Queensland .
  • Physiotherapists Registration Board of New South Wales - The New South Wales Physiotherapists Registration Board is a statutory authority responsible for the registration of physiotherapists which was established under the Physiotherapists Act 2001.
  • The Physiotherapists Board of South Australia - The Physiotherapists Board of South Australia is the statutory authority responsible to the Minister of Health for administering the Physiotherapists Act 1991. The Board is constituted under Section 5 of the Physiotherapists Act 1991

Includes biomechanical animations, dynamic MRI, and movie clips to supplement the 3D model. Leading practitioners in each field provide explanations of the illustrations.
  • Atlas of Human Anatomy in Cross Section - A website developed by the University of Iowa that provides a high-quality color photographic atlas of sectional anatomy.
  • Superficial Muscles Tutorial
  • Innerbody.com – A free website that takes you through a pictorial tour of several different systems of the human body e.g. skeletal, muscular, cardiovascular. Requires a java compatible browser to view.
  • LUMEN Muscle List – A list providing basic information about specific muscles, giving a pictorial description of the muscle as well describing what the muscles basic functions are.
  • Hypermuscle: Muscles in Action – A website that helps students learn the muscle actions of the human body.
  • Whole Brain Atlas – A website developed by the Harvard University which displays images of the brain affected by different conditions and diseases.
  • Individuals - Anatomy and Physiology -The Franklin Institute Online.

  • Wheeless Online Textbook of Orthopaedics - Comprehensive Online text of musculoskeletal system in health and disease.
  • Worldortho - Online Textbooks of orthopaedics and trauma.
  • Medline Plus Walking Aids - Provides links to information on different types of walking aids and their prescription and use.
  • Knee Surgery Information – Website concerned entirely about the knee and surgery to correct knee injuries. Outlines preventative measures as well as corrective surgery. Provides useful diagrams.
  • Orthopeadic Surgical Procedures - videos and information on common orthopaedic surgical procedures
  • Medscape Orthopaedics Home Page - Orthopaedic information, tutorials, definitions, links to journal articles and conference proceedings on all aspects of orthopaedics. Aimed at Physicans / Surgeons but with significant relevance for Physiotherapy (Free registration required to log in).
  • Shoulderdoc.co.uk - Comprehensive shoulder and upperlimb information including pathophysiology, surgery and rehabilitation for a multitude of upper limb conditions.
  • Spine-Health.com - Spine conditions, surgery and rehabilitation information with animated tutorials.
  • The UpperLimb.com Guide for Physiotherapists and doctors to upper limb conditions, surgery and rehabilitation.
  • Australian Knee Clinic -A website dedicated to the rehabilitation of the knee. Contains videos, pdf and lecture slides
  • HealthWeb - Orthopedics – A page of links to orthopedic websites.
  • Orthosports - Orthopaedic & Sports Medicine Physicians – Orthosports is a professional association of Orthopaedic surgeons in Sydney who specialize in joint replacement, arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery. Several well constructed patient guides/handouts are provided.

  • Centre for Evidence Based Medicine Homepage - Overview and links on EBM
  • Centre for Evidence-Based Physiotherapy - Based at the University of Sydney , administers the PEDro database
  • OTseeker - Database that contains abstracts of systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials relevant to occupational therapy. Trials have been critically appraised and rated to assist you to evaluate their validity and interpretability.
  • Bandolier – An online journal that provides evidence based articles
  • Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine – A centre developed in Oxford whose aim is to promote evidence-based health care and provide support and resources to anyone who wants to make use of them.
  • Netting the evidence - Netting the Evidence is intended to facilitate evidence-based healthcare by providing support and access to helpful organisations and useful learning resources, such as an evidence-based virtual library, software and journals.

  • The Physiotherapy Pain Association - UK-based group of Physiotherapists with Pain interest. Links to other Pain sites.
  • The National Foundation for the Treatment of Pain (US) - a not-for-profit organization providing support for patients who are suffering from intractable pain, their families, friends and the physicians who treat them. Also a resource for medical professionals and attorneys concerned with legal issues regarding the legitimate treatment of pain.

  • BreastCancer.org (US) – a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing the most reliable, complete, and up-to-date information about breast cancer. Provides information on Prevention, symptoms and diagnosis, treatment, recovery and renewal etc.
  • OncoLink.com – Website developed by the University of Pennsylvania that explains types of Cancer , cancer treatment information, coping with cancer.
